March 21,2024-1803 House Presentation


The Friends of the 1803 House will be presenting at the Emmaus Historical Society March Program. "Dig this: The archaeological Dig at the 1803 House Explanined..." The presentation will be on March 21, 2024 at 7:00pm at St. Johns Lutheran Church located at 501 Chestnut Street, Emmaus.  Begun by a teacher of Seven Generations Charter School in 2012, the dig project at the 1803 House, was adpoted by Lehigh University Professor of Archaeology, David Small, and his students from 2014 to 2019.  Over the years, as we peeled back the layers of soil and artifacts we looked for answers to the myster of what the sturcture on the kitchend end of the house could be.  What did we Discover?

2022 Old Fashioned Christmas at the 1803 House:

December 2nd, from 10am to 2pm [2022 Flyer]:
Even with the rain for Old Fashioned on Saturday, the 1803 House was warm, cozy and full of holiday spirit: the open     hearth fire with gingerbread baking was warm and heavenly; the Macungie Minstrelaires were superb; Christmas tree      with colonial decorations were stunning; windowsills decorated by members of the Emmaus Garden Club were dazzling; decorated Douglas Fir holiday wreaths for sale just beautiful; kids crafts and games were fun; and the Scale    models of Emmaus historic sites by Andre Fatula were so fascinating.  Also, many tours, loads of stories, oodles of great conversations, tons of questions, and the holiday spirit felt throughout the house.  Visitors faces...PRICELESS. Hear Ye! Hear Ye! Come one, come all...2023:

The 1803 House celebrated 22 decades, that's 220 years of history.  
Everyone enjoyed special ale "Grey Beard" brewed by Jim Yergey, in commemorative 1803 House glass, along with the tasty local cider, cocktails and wine offerings. The homemade food from Red Ticket Cafe and old-time folk music of Kelly Planer and the Perks made the afternoon even more enjoyable.  And the themed raffle was a great success!

Holiday Decorations with Fruit:

For the Christmas Holidays colonialists decorated their homes with fruit. In the picture below a green round fruit that surrounds Christmas Tree.  It is "Osage Orange". The Osage orange tree and the green fruits which were eaten by the prehistoric Giant Sloth.  When the Sloths became extinct a long, long time ago, so did the Osage Orange Tree.  But fate and some very ambitious Indians interceded and the Osage orange tree became the most planted tree of the 19th century. The Indians used the tree's wood to make bows since it was very strong, flexible, durable and did not rot.  The wood shavings were also used to make golden yellow or mossy green dyes.  The branches were thorny and the animals did not want to tangle with it.  So, the colonists planted the tree around their house for protection.  The fruit however, was not eaten by any animal or human, so the colonists used it for decorations.
